Venue:RMIT Capitol Theatre
113 Swanston St
Melbourne, Vic, 3000
Runtime:60 mins

Session Description

In a session celebrating 400 years since Galileo first turned a telescope towards the cosmos, and in this the official year of astronomy, internationally renowned theoretical physicist Lawrence M Krauss will ruminate on the future of the Universe itself, and also on the future of life within it, using as his starting point recent observations in cosmology. An erudite, engaging public speaker he will first discuss why the Universe we appear to inhabit is the worst of all possible universes, as far as considerations of the quality and quantity of life is concerned. He will then address several fascinating questions that have arisen as a result of our discovery that the dominant energy of the universe resides in empty space: Can life be eternal in an eternally expanding universe? Are the laws of physics tailored for the existence of life? And, what will science in the far future tell us about the universe? This session will be chaired by Niall Byrne, science communicator.
